My father, Bertram Van Breemen was born as World War I was ending. He began his adult life as WWII was heating up, and he served in the US Army Air Corps. He spent his life creating inventions that would make a difference in our world. One of the first patents he received was for a field communicator that would translate code on the battle field, without waiting for transmission to headquarters, then back to the front lines. Another was the jet fighter ejection seat that saved so many pilot's lives. Many of the electronic and optical parts of the Apollo moon mission were his creations. He developed the guidance systems for the smart bombs that saved lives by refining targets to a single building, instead of a city. He was responsible for the bar code scanner, and the high definition TV screens we all enjoy. This screen was called the Van Breemen screen, and he won an award for it. RCA/GE made a great deal of money from this. After he retired from his working life he began to create musical instruments, another activity he dearly loved. He made violins and cellos and mountain dulcimers in his life as a lutier. Our world and our daily lives are different because my father lived. They are better in many ways. He will be sorely missed.
