Obituary for Selma Grant (Oliver)

Selma Grant (Oliver)
Selma (Oliver) Grant, 85, of Indianapolis, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Indiana.

Selma was born October 27, 1930 in Fulton, Missouri to Henry N. and Anna (Whanger) Oliver. She was a 1948 graduate of Fulton High School where she was valedictorian of her class. She began private piano lessons while in elementary school and went on to study piano at William Woods College, the University of Louisville Conservatory of Music, and Indiana University-Bloomington, where she received her bachelor’s degree in music education.

On December 27, 1951, Selma married Garrett McCue Grant, also of Fulton, Missouri. After Garrett completed his studies in music education at Indiana University-Bloomington, the couple moved to Galveston, Indiana, and later Beech Grove, Indiana where Garrett was the band director. After completing her studies in music, Selma went on to teach music in the Beech Grove Public School system and in the Lawrence Township Public Schools where the family moved when Garrett became head of the township musical orchestra program. After receiving her master’s degree in Psychometry from Ball State University, Selma worked as a school psychometrist for the Lawrence Township Schools until her retirement.

Selma was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. Throughout her life, Selma was very active in community service, volunteering for years in the PTA, Tri Kappa, her church, the Indianapolis Children's Museum, and other social and service organizations. A passionate supporter of the arts, she was a subscriber to the Indianapolis Symphony, the Indiana Reparatory Theatre, and a member of the Indianapolis Museum of Art for decades and she and Garrett would listen to jazz albums on their beloved stereo nearly every Sunday morning after church. Selma loved planning activities with family and friends. One of her happiest days occurred in the summer of 1966 when she won her one and only tennis match against her husband.

Selma is survived by one daughter, Janis Chloe Grant (David Lawler) of Bloomington, and two sons, Douglas Garrett (Molly) Grant of Morgantown and Jeffrey Oliver (Terri) Grant of Indianapolis. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Garrett Zacker of Denver, Colorado, Olivia Zacker of Bloomington, and Maria Grant and Nicholas Grant of Indianapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and older brother, Donald Whanger Oliver.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Morning Pointe of Franklin for their wonderful care. A special note of deepest gratitude to two care providers from Right At Home home healthcare services, Pamela Anderson and Donna Bluitt for their extraordinary personal care and love for Selma the past several years.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Johnson County, 3827 North Graham Road, Franklin, IN, 46131.

Services are private.

Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street), in Franklin, IN, 46131, is handling the arrangements. Online Condolences may be sent to the family at www.swartzmortuary.com. Information 317-738-0202.
