Jim W. Overby
Jim W. Overby, 77, passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at his residence in Franklin, Indiana.
He was born March 22, 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Earl and Mary (Deckard) Overby. He married Martha L. (Albers) Overby on November 24, 1948 in Indianapolis. She survives.
Mr. Overby had been a job setter and supervisor for Chrysler Corporation at 30th Street and Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the United Auto Workers. He attended Southport High School. He organized and started Horseshoe Camp east of Franklin in 1959.
He was a member of Grace Place Community Church and had always been active in the church. He was an avid gardener and loved giving his harvest away to his neighbors and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Martha L. (Albers) Overby of Franklin; two sons, Jim R. (Glenda Mitchell) Overby of Trafalgar and Jerry (Teresa Austin) Overby of Franklin; four daughters, Juanita (Gary) Mitchell of Franklin, Judy (Tom) Jacobs of Nineveh, Julie (David) Parsley of Trafalgar, and Jenny (John Weddle) Kemp of Indianapolis; a brother, John (Colleen) Overby of Gainesville, Florida; a sister, Connie (Eugene) Pearson of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Brian Mitchell in 1994; a sister, Vida Chafin; and two brothers, Floyd and Rusty Overby.
A service will be conducted at 1 P.M. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. Morton Street (US 31) in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 until 8 P.M. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.
