Obituary for Thomas W. "Tom" Ashley
Thomas W. “Tom” Ashley, 76, of Morgantown, IN. passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, IN. He was born November 29, 1942 in Indianapolis, IN. to the late Thomas Wayne Ashley and Liddie May (Esteb) Ashley. He married Nancy J. (Johnston) Ashley on December 12, 1965 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Reseda, California, she survives.
Tom attended Center Grove Schools. He had been a Johnson County Sheriff Deputy for over 37 years having been part of establishing the Johnson County Sheriff Horse Patrol and providing security at Center Grove High School and Indian Creek High School basketball games. He previously had been a Deputy for the Brown County Sheriff’s office, and owned and operated Ashley Drywall and Painting. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War having received two Purple Hearts.
In May of 2018, he was part of the Indy Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church in Trafalgar, IN, the Fraternal Order of Police, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Past Master of Union Village Masonic Lodge #545 in Providence, Union Village Order of the Eastern Star #584, Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, and the Johnson County Shrine Club. He enjoyed deep sea fishing, going on cruises, playing cards, and especially playing poker.
Survivors include his wife Nancy J. (Johnston) Ashley of Morgantown, IN; children Tracy L. Hilton (Larry) of Bargersville, IN, Thomas Wayne Ashley Jr. (Ladeana) of Bargersville, IN, and Tammara A. Zieleniuk (James) of Columbus, IN; ten grandchildren Seth Hilton and Kaitlyn Hilton both of Bargersville, IN, Jacob Ashley of Springfield, MO, Zachary Ashley (Amber) of Ft. Riley, KS, Madison Ashley of Bargersville, IN, Justin Everhart of Melbourne, FL, Ryan Everhart (Britney) of Camby, IN, Michael Zieleniuk of Columbus, IN, Natasha Roth (Sean) of Indianapolis, IN, and Tabath Zieleniuk of Indianapolis, IN; three great-grandchildren Briella Ashley, Lydia Zieleniuk, and Jaxson Donnelly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Larry Ashley and Raymond Ashley.
The Reverend Ron Sodrel will conduct a service on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN. Friends may call Monday, May 13, 2019 from 4PM till 8PM at the mortuary where Union Village Masonic Lodge #545 will conduct a Masonic service at 7:45 PM. Entombment will take place at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, IN, with full military honors being conducted by the United States Army and Franklin American Legion Post #205 Honor Guards.
