Joseph D. Jepsen, 25, of Franklin died on Thursday April 4.
Joseph was an incredibly unique young man, who loved traveling the world, experiencing new cultures, and meeting new people. After High School, Joe volunteered for a year in Israel at an ecological kibbutz. He then returned home to save up money, which he used to spend another year in Thailand, Nepal and India. He then hitchhiked through most of Europe before spending another year in New Zealand. Altogether he lived in or visited 18 countries. Joe had a true heart for people and was extremely generous and kind.
Joe once wrote, “Don’t get me wrong, I obviously love when people ask me about my travels. But ask me why I travel, and you may as well ask the bird why he soars, the wolf why she howls, the tree why it digs its roots deep into the earth.”
Joseph was born June 17, 1993 in Waukegan, Illinois, and graduated from Franklin Community High School in 2012. He is survived by his parents Reverend Daniel and Amy (Bensinger) Jepsen of Franklin, IN., sisters Rachel Polston (Charles) of Greenwood, IN and Sarah Thain (Mitchell) of St. Louis, MO, grandparents Earl Bensinger of Kalamazoo, MI, and Sally Jepsen of Clinton, TN, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by grandparents June (Berg) Jepsen, Harry Jepsen, and Trula (Adams) Bensinger. Mike Mercer will conduct a memorial service on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 6:30 P.M. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN, where friends may call from 3PM till service time. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jepsen,

We were shocked and saddened to hear of Joe's death. He was a volunteer in Kibbutz Lotan's kitchen and we remember his contribution to our community. Joe's loss is felt by many members of our kibbutz especially those who worked closely with him. Not only the hard physical work that he took upon himself but also his openness and willingness to learn about the very unique way of life we have in Israel in general and on Lotan in particular were brought to mind by more than one member here.

As his direct supervisor I particularly remember Joe as one of the best kitchen volunteers I've had on Lotan. His intelligence, dedication and helpfulness were felt by all who worked with him and he was always supportive of his co-workers, which is something that we will always remember about him.

I want to offer my personal sympathies and hope these words will bring some small measure of comfort to you both.

I had the privilege to be one of Jo’s neighbors in Kibbutz Lotan.
I say privilege because having him as someone that is usually around was a bless. Always having a big smile on his face, greeting, asking how are you, and looking to connect. Inspiring and lovely young man, makes everyone around him happier just by being. Was shocked and sad to hear about his death. Sending love and strength to his loved ones.
