Obituary for Ivan Lee Skaggs

Ivan Lee Skaggs, 94, of Franklin, IN passed away Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, IN. He was born June 23, 1924 in Indianapolis, IN. to Daniel and Irene (Breeden) Skaggs. He married Betty L. (Chambers) Skaggs on June 21, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN she preceded him in death on October 31, 2018.
He was a 1942 graduate of Southport High School. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific Theater as an aviation radioman aboard the U.S.S. Suwannee. He had been a project superintendent for the Skillman Corporation in Indianapolis for thirteen years retiring in 1987. He and his late wife Betty also owned and operated Yesterday’s Antique Store in Morgantown, IN. He was a 58 year member of Southport Masonic Lodge #217, Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine Temple where he was past president of the Arab Patrol in 1973, a member of the Hillbilly Unit, organized the Murat Bass Anglers Club, the Gatlin Gun Club, the Johnson County Shrine Club, and a former member of Samaria Christian Church in Trafalgar, IN.
Survivors include his three children, Carolyn S. Richards (Gary) of Greenwood, IN, Daniel L. Skaggs of Noblesville, IN, and John A. Skaggs (Valesa) of Indianapolis, IN; seven grandchildren, Scott Richards (Kelly) of Greenwood, IN, Bethany Hannon (Patrick) of Greenwood, IN, Allison Skaggs of Franklin, IN, Leah Skaggs of Indianapolis, IN, Kyle Skaggs of Indianapolis, IN, Ryan Skaggs (Heather) of Bloomington, IN, and Andrew Skaggs (Jenny) of Noblesville, IN; ten great-grandchildren, Trevan, Tristin, Bailey, Colbie, Sydney, Trace, Serenity, Emma, Benjamin and Laura; several nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister Evelyn O’Steimer and infant sister Marilyn Skaggs.
Southport Masonic Lodge #270 will conduct a Masonic service on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 1PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN, followed by a celebration of life service conducted by Chaplain Elaine Clark with full military honors to follow, conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard and Franklin American Legion Post 205. Friends may call Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 10AM till service time at the mortuary. Inurnment will take place at Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN.
