Obituary for H. Melvin "Sonny" Voiles

H. Melvin "Sonny" Voiles, 73, of the Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin, Indiana passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at his residence.
He was born May 21, 1937 in Coleman Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana to Herman and Roxy (Kerlin) Voiles. He married Donna J. (Wise) Voiles on May 13, 1956 at the Trafalgar United Methodist Church; she survives.
He retired in 1993 as a quality control specialist for the Bio Synthetic Insulin Department of Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis after 36 and 1/2 years of service. He was a 1955 graduate of Center Grove High School, where he was class president and played on the basketball team. He attended Franklin College and Indiana Central University. He was also a member of the Trafalgar United Methodist Church, a charter member of the White River Township Jaycees, served as a Cub Scout Master for Troop 214 in Bargersville, Indiana, and had been a coach for Center Grove Little League. He and his wife, Donna, were charter members of the board forming the Center Grove Lassie League, and were active in the Diabetes Bike-A-Thon in Perry Township, Marion County, Indianapolis. He was an intergenerational reading tutor at Sugar Grove Elementary School. Sonny was an amateur artist and was the artist who designed the logo for West Grove Elementary School.
Survivors include his wife, Donna J. (Wise) Voiles of Franklin; son Curt (Lisa) Voiles of Whiteland; daughter Cristi (Mark) Heller of Indianapolis; and granddaughter Jory Sejdiu of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry K. Voiles.
The Reverend Doug Bohall will conduct a service Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Swartz Family Community Mortuary And Memorial Center, 300 S. Morton Street (US 31) in Franklin. Friends may call Friday, August 27, 2010 from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M. at the mortuary. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, Indiana.
