Obituary for Fern A. Snowden (Wilkerson)

Fern A. (Wilkerson) Snowden, 88, of Indianapolis, IN. returned to her heavenly home and the eternal love of God on October 25, 2018.
Fern was born to the late Joseph and Elva (Brown) Wilkerson on March 11, 1930 in Casey County KY. Her family moved to Indianapolis in 1940. She attended George Washington High School.
She married Kenneth T. Shirley in 1948 and they made their home in New Whiteland along with two daughters. They resided there for 18 years.
She met and married Leon Snowden on October 22, 1973 at the Whiteland United Methodist Church and resided in Indianapolis for her remaining years.
Fern had worked at Sears at the Greenwood Park Mall and later at Pete Steffey’s in Greenwood as a hostess. She was a member of The South Emerson Avenue Church of God in Beech Grove where she served on numerous committees and sang in the choir.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a daughter Pamela S. Gaines (Denver) of Indianapolis, IN, grandchildren Jennifer Mandrell of Indianapolis, IN, Steve Gaines of Indianapolis, IN. and Christopher Beal of Michigan City, IN. and Jason Mandrell of Indianapolis, IN. Great grandchildren Amanda Gaines (Dillon Webb), Jeremy Smalling, Bryan Gaines, Joe Mandrell, Quinton Gaines and Kendra Gaines and great-great grandson Brantlee Gaines. Also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, several loved ones, and her special friend Illa Mandrell of Beech Grove, IN. She is preceded in death by her husband Leon in 2008, a brother Ancil Wilkerson in 2003 and daughter Cynthia Beal in 2007.
A service will be conducted on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 10 A.M. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN. Friends may call Sunday 2-6 PM at the mortuary. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, IN. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.swartzmortuary.com.
