Obituary for DeWane Duke Calvert

DeWane Duke Calvert, 86, of Greenwood, IN passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He was born August 19, 1931 in White River Township, Johnson County, IN to Corlette Coin and Beulah (Duke) Calvert. He married Shirley Joan Calvert on May 10, 1953 at the First Christian Church in Honolulu, HI, she survives.
He was a 1950 graduate of Center Grove High School where he played basketball and baseball. He entered the United Navy on June 27, 1951 at the Great Lake Naval Station and was discharged on June 28, 1955 on North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, CA with the rank of A03 Aviation Ordinance Petty Officer 3rd Class. During his time of service, he had been stationed at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL; Treasure Island in San Francisco, CA; Barbers Point Naval Air Station in Oahu, HI; joined the VP28 Patrol Squadron, being stationed at Naha Naval Air Station in Okinawa, Japan where he served six months flying 30 missions over enemy territory, then to Barbers Point Naval Air Station in Hawaii, then at Kodiak Naval Air Station in Kodiak, AK, and later assigned to Ford Island Naval Air Station where he joined the VC35 Fighter Squadron, and was honorably discharged on June 27, 1955 at North Island Naval Air Station in North Island, CA. He also had served four years in the inactive reserves having been discharged on June 27, 1959. He had been a farmer in White River Township for 23 years. Later he had been a truck driver for the Johnson County Farm Bureau and assisted in operating the Farm Bureau Elevator in Bargersville, IN. He also had worked part-time at Walker’s Hatchery in Greenwood, IN. He was a member of Rocklane Christian Church in Greenwood, IN and was a former member of Greenwood Christian Church where he had served fourteen years as an elder. He also had served on the Center Grove Alumni Committee. He enjoyed watching and attending sporting events. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to the many people he touched.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Joan Calvert of Greenwood, IN; two sons, Tony Calvert (Angie) of Seattle, WA, and Mark Calvert (Debby) of Novi, MI; six grandchildren, Justin Calvert of Seattle, WA, Gillian Calvert of Auburn, WA, Ryan Calvert (Melissa) of Seattle, WA, Grant Calvert of Greenwood, IN, Erin Holdorf (Brad) of White Lake, MI, and Alexander Calvert of Novi, MI; four great-grandchildren, Campbell Holdorf, Valen Calvert, Madison Calvert, Logan Calvert, and expecting the fourth great-grandchild in November of 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard Darrel Calvert on February 24, 1974 and Cameron Coin Calvert on March 15, 2016.
The Reverend Seth Amerine will conduct a service with a eulogy presented by his son Tony Calvert, with the Reverend Shan Rutherford and Jim Girdley presenting the military honor call on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31, (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN. Friends may call Tuesday, June 5, 2018 from 4PM till 8PM at the mortuary. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, IN with full military honors.
