Melvin H. Smith, 96, of Bloomington, formerly of Bargersville, and Shelby County, IN, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington, IN. He was born July 2, 1920 in Owen County, KY to Howard and Rell Martha (Hensley) Smith.
Melvin was the last surviving member of his 1938 graduating class of Straughn High School in Henry County, Indiana. He was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church in Trafalgar, IN. He was active at the Franklin Senior Citizen Center. He had been a farmer in Johnson and Shelby Counties and also retired from Tom O’Brien Chrysler in Indianapolis, IN and Greenwood, IN in 1979 as a parts and service manager, after 25 years of service.
Surviving are his children, Beverly Glentzer (Lewis) of Franklin, IN, Sandra Black (Keith) of Bloomington, IN, Barbara Burdine (Mike) of Franklin, IN, Joyce Lowes (Douglas) of Falmouth, IN, Marvin Smith (Karen) of Bloomington, IN, and Connie Ament of Livermore, CO; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marian Anderson Smith; former spouse Helen (Elkins) Smith in 2012; great-grandchild Avery Lowes; a brother Porter Smith; sisters Sue Patterson and Evelyn Owens.
The Reverend Ron Sodrel will conduct a service Friday, May 19, 2017 at 1:30PM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN, where friends may call Friday, May 19, 2017 from 11AM till service time at the mortuary.
