Condolence From: Virginia Hull
Condolence: My condolences to the family and friends of Mary Ruth. I grew up a block from Mary Ruth and our mothers were friends. So I knew that she had been a missionary in India, and was excited to learn that she was going to be my civics teacher in junior high. We all wanted to see what a sari was like, and persuaded her to wear one to school one day - very nice. But I most remember her for leading our MYF group on Sunday evenings. It was during the late 50's and we got to do all kinds of fun things - taffy pulls, hay rides and box lunch socials. The meetings were in the church basement and sometimes we even danced there. When some members of the church heard about that, they threatened to put a stop to it. I was glad that they never did. Mary Ruth touched many lives and was an inspiration to all.

Condolence From: Karen Foley Bosley
Condolence: It is with profound sorrow that I learned of the passing of my former teacher and loving friend, Mary Ruth Nichols. As my seventh-grade English and eighth-grade civics teacher, she helped instill in me a love of learning and a burning desire to become a teacher myself. We stayed in touch through all the years since, getting together for lunches as often as we could, and for several years we shared a membership in Christ Church United Methodist, Manhattan. My heart is full of love for this wonderful woman, and I grieve with her precious family. Karen Bosley

Condolence From: Karel Van Horn - Seldner
Condolence: My deepest sympathy to Lynne, Patrick, Tim and Michael. Maryruth was a dear friend of the Van Horns. My dad knew the Nickels family from the time they lived in Windfall. My folks loaned Maryruth a large steamer trunk she took to India in 1949; I still have it and will treasure it always. It symbolizes her adventurous, missionary spirit that characterized her life's work.

For decades her folks lived less than 1/2 a block from my house on Churchman Avenue.. My classmates and I were fortunate to have her as our 7th grade English teacher and 8th grade civics teacher. She was patient, loving and truly enjoyed helping us learn.

She was the first person I knew who had traveled abroad and as a little girl, I was fascinated when she told stories of far away India.

She dedicated her life to her church and touched the lives of many, many people all over the world. What a beautiful legacy she has left us.
Rest in peace, Maryruth.
